What is a Detail and how does it help vehicle value?

One of the biggest misconceptions of detailing is that a detail is just a “simple clean”. Detailing is about caring and protecting a vehicle through diligent processes in order to restore value in the vehicle. With our packages at All Terrain Detailing your vehicle won’t just look clean, it will be protected and conditioned. Professional details range from $100-$400 per vehicle. Many people may think this is expensive for “just a clean.” Professional details don’t just care about the short term look of a vehicle, we do everything we can to keep the value in your vehicles.

According to Kelley Blue Book vehicles lose about 60% of their value after just 5 years. When dealerships are looking at a vehicle, perception is everything. If your vehicle inside or out looks dirty or like you didn’t take care of it, you will get less for the vehicle than if everything looks clean and new. There are three ways that a vehicle can depreciate that you can control; the exterior condition, the interior condition, and the engine. We will go over how a regular detail can help you keep the value in your vehicle in these three situations.

First we will go over how your vehicle can depreciate based on the exterior condition of your vehicle. The outside of a vehicle is the first impression when trading in your vehicle, so if the outside looks poor your salesman may not like the car from the get go. Common problems we see with exteriors are rust, bubbling, paint fading, paint contamination, rust or peeling. All of these are signs of poor clear coat and unhealthy paint. This means the dealership may have to put money into redoing parts or the entire car hence bringing down your trade in value. With All Terrain Detailing’s Exterior Service we ensure keeping your paint and clearcoat healthy making everyone jealous of how good of condition and shiny your vehicle is. Here are our steps of an exterior detail and what it helps protect

  • Paint decontamination - This process helps get all of the road grime and rail dust off your paint, reducing your chances of rusting or bubbling.

  • Buffing - Clear coat is a topcoat transparent gloss that goes over your painted true color. Oftentimes this gloss can get scratches in it from car washes, items rubbing on it, or things hitting on it while driving down the road. Buffing smoothes out that clear coat, reducing the amount of swirls and scratches on your vehicle.

  • Hand Wax - This process is the protection piece of the puzzle. Waxes are essential in protecting the value of your vehicle. Here are ways having a wax can be helpful

    • UV Rays- Without a wax your paint becomes vulnerable to sun fading, moisture, rust, peeling, and discoloration. A wax is the first layer of defense for your vehicle's paint and clear coat which protects from these very expensive repairs.

    • Acidic Rain - All rain has acid in it. Even these little amounts build up over time. Overtime this will eat through your clear coat and cause discoloration and sun fading on your paint

    • Winter Salt - Salt does essentially the same thing as acid rain. It eats through the clear coat and causes rust spots, bubbling, discoloration, and fading. This is why vehicles in the North are seen with a lot of rust, and vehicles in the South hardly ever have rust. Vehicles in the north are exposed to much harsher conditions than that of the South, which is why it is imperative to protect your clear coat and paint as much as possible in order to sustain your vehicles value

Second we will go over how your vehicle can depreciate based on the interior condition of your vehicle. With All Terrain Detailings Interior Service we are focused on making the inside look as new as possible. Here are our steps of our interior detail and how it helps preserve your vehicle's value.

  • Doors and Dash - We clean every inch of the hard plastics in your vehicle, removing any dirt or grime on the surfaces leaving your vehicle looking like new.

  • Seats - Whether you have cloth or leather seats over time they will get dirty.

    • Cloth seats - Every time you get in the vehicle, your clothes will leave particles of dirt in your seats. Maybe you spill something on your seats which causes staining in the fabric leaving the seats look very dirty. Our seat shampoo service will extract any contaminants within the seats.

    • Leather seats - Leather seats often look cleaner but will still have the same dirt buildup as cloth seats oftentimes leaving your seats looking discolored or faded. With a professional detail service we clean away that dirt and grime, and condition the seats to bring them back to new.

  • Carpet - Your feet track in all the elements of the outside world. Whether it's salt, snow, dirt, mud, or water they all deteriorate your carpet. This will lead to your carpet being matted down. With a detailed service we extract all those elements which lead to “fluffing up” your carpet making it look as new as possible!

Lastly we will go over how your vehicle can depreciate based on the condition of your engine. If your engine has battery acid, rusted bolts, dirt, or dust this can lower your vehicle's value. Through several steps of an engine clean you can get your engine looking like new!

All three of these factors can deteriorate your vehicle's value, but with a regular detail once or twice a year you can keep the value of your vehicle and keep cash in your pockets. Although details may be viewed as expensive they can save you thousands in trade in value! We went over how your vehicle's interior condition, exterior condition, and engine can all affect your car's trade in value. As shown in this post a detail is not just a simple clean. The art of detailing can be very stressful and overwhelming, but in turn can be very rewarding seeing the value increase in a vehicle's value just on your “simple clean.”
